INTRAD from November 28-30

by Pelham Juriansz

The INTRAD Exhibition and Investor Forum under the theme 'Invest in our Infrastructure', organised by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL), will take place from November 28 to 30 at the new BMICH Convention Hall.

Organisers are expecting investors from 17 different countries to visit the exhibition and Investor Forum.

Described as a "major international event showcasing Sri Lanka's investment opportunities in key sectors under one roof", the exhibition will focus on the theme by seeking the assistance of multilaterals, donor agencies and investors. The concept is for the relevant ministries and other agencies to showcase their products at the exhibition. It has been organised to boost tourism by promoting Sri Lanka's image. The exhibition will consist of around 77 stalls housed inside the main exhibition hall and 10 stalls outside. It will not necessarily be a trade exhibition, but an infrastructure exhibition where the private sector will play a role as well.

The participants will be government institutions which have projects identified or in the conceptual stage for infrastructure development. The sectors represented will be transport, information and communication technology, power and energy, tourism, housing and construction, education, banking, health, environment and agriculture.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga has endorsed this exhibition in a message by commenting on the fact that the NCCSL has organised the INTRAD series of exhibitions very successfully since 1996. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has also given his blessings to the exhibition, calling it an investor forum and has congratulated the NCCSL for organising it at a time when Sri Lanka is seeking assistance from donor agencies, multilaterals and investors.

According to NCCSL sources, the areas that will be concentrated on for improvement during the exhibition will be transport, power and energy and tourism (which will include the building of cabana-type structures for tourists).

Government institutions taking an active role in the exhibition are the Ministries of Health, Mass Communication, Transport, Ports Development and Shipping, Agriculture and Livestock, Irrigation and Water Management, Rural Economy, Housing, Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs, Rehabilitation and Restoration and Refugees and the Sri Lanka Tourist Board, ICT Agency, Board of Investment, Urban Development Authority and Regional Ministries.
