American College of Higher Education : Transfer and Graduation ceremony 2003 On October 28, the American College of Higher Education celebrated one of the grandest events on its calendar - the Transfer and Graduation ceremony 2003. The American College, which is situated in Dehiwala, is a pioneer in starting the American system of higher education in Sri Lanka. Established in 1995 and having a branch campus in Kandy, it boasts of two direct affiliations with Broward Community College (BCC) Ft. Lauderdale, Florida which has a student strength of 105,000 and with Excelsior College - a member of the University of the State of New York. ACHE has official articulation agreements with 38 flagship universities in USA and Canada such as Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tec), Northern Illinois University, Pepperdine University etc. These agreements enable students to transfer smoothly to excellent universities without any loss of credit. Credits earned by ACHE students are carried on official American College transcripts which are recognised internationally, thereby establishing the identity of the American College worldwide. Almost 200 students have already been a part of this highly successful transfer process and are now reading for various degrees such as Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Psychology, Business, Hospitality Management and Pre-medicine in universities in USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan and Dubai. Prof. B. L. Panditharatne stated, 'the transfer and graduation ceremony is the culmination that celebrates the fact that some of our students have completed the first two years of an American Bachelors degree at our college and are ready to transfer to foreign universities to complete the balance two years and others have completed their associate degrees. At the celebrations, Ms Sherryn Yaseen-Mangalagama, CEO of ACHE, captured the attention of the audience with her college report. She spoke about the long, tough journey that everyone went through to make American College what it is today. Observing the smiling faces of both her students and teachers as they recollected those cherished memories. She was sure that the effort was very much worthwhile. A video presentation proceeded to display the details of college life in ACHE where a few of its existing students aired their personal views and perspectives and how happy they were at ACHE. In his congratulatory remarks, Dr. Bill Green commented on the excellent quality of students who have transferred from the American College and said that BCC was proud and happy to have such a long and strong relationship with ACHE. Mr. Bruce Lohof read some excerpts from a speech written but never delivered by novelist Kurt Vonnegut at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1997) which was both humorous, thought provoking and very pertinent to a graduating student. After Professor Panditharatne felicitated the students, the graduation ceremony got off to a good start. Forty two students and their parents glowed with pride as the students got on stage in their black cloaks adorned with college colours to receive their certificates. These students had either graduated with an Associate degree in Business or Arts from Excelsior College or were ready for transfer in January 2004. Other students received merit awards and some were placed on the Dean's list or President's list. Mr. Suresh Yaseen commented very optimistically that the American College Graduation Ceremony 2004 would see the first batch of students receiving their American Bachelors degrees in Sri Lanka! |
