The soul of the land

A photographic exhibition of Churches of France was opened at 6.30 pm on November 21 at the Alliance Francaise de Kandy by Father Martin Quere, founder member.

The exhibition which continues till November 28 is the last cultural event proposed by the Alliance Francaise de Kandy at 412 Peradeniya Road. From January 1 2004, the Alliance will welcome its students, members and friends at its newly acquired premises, 642 Peradeniya Road.

Looming straight upwards, in the centre of the village or tucked away deep in the countryside is the church, silent testimony to the Faith....

It may not always display artistic excellence, but it certainly expresses 'the soul of the land'. The lens of the camera sensitive and eager to rekindle the full impact of the memory and nostalgia, stamped in its more often than not modest belfries, bears witness to it.

Behind that lens, the eye of the true 'lover' the word 'amateur' being used in the original sense of the word, chooses to spend his leisure hours at week's end, to flush out, in the heart of the countryside, now this chapel, now that church, sometimes in a state of partial disrepair. Maurice Soulie now invites us to share with him the joy of this ramble.

Through 57 colour photographs this exhibition depicts diverse churches you can discover in a district of southwestern France, called Bas or Lower Quercy.

Most of the time originating from the Middle Ages, and the time of Crusades, very often destroyed or ravaged by the savage struggle of men - the Hundred Years War, the Wars of Religion, the French Revolution - but always rebuilt, their presence in this picturesque landscape perpetuates the eternal presence of the sacred.
