30 + 5 = A Celebration! :

Down memory lane with Mariazelle

It's happening this Wednesday at the BMICH in Colombo as Sri Lanka's internationally renowned singing sensation Mariazelle Goonetilleke presents her much awaited anniversary concert 30+5 = A Celebration.

Joining her on stage to enthral audiences will be colleagues in the music industry such as Sohan Weerasinghe, Dalreen Suby, Bathiya and Santhush, Piyal Perera and Chandral Fonseka, and backed by the popular brand - 'Kings'. And of course more surprises from the audience.

Sri Lanka's reigning Karaoke Queen, Wathsala Goonetilleke will also make a special guest appearance. "Wathsala is my god daughter. She has been like a daughter to me and I have watched with interest her talent develop over the years. I am proud to have her with me on the show", Mariazelle says.

Adding to the colour and excitement will also be Latin American and Modern Oriental dance troupes of Chandana Wickremasinghe, Rajini Selvanayagam, Pradeepa Ariyawansa and El Latino.

Sponsored by the Sunday Observer, Sarsaviya, Sun and Hiru FM. "30+5=A Celebration" is presented by the Three Roses Sports and Welfare Club in Kalubowila, Decibel, in aid of Ward 16 of the Colombo South National Hospital Kalubowila and other charities.

I have Known Mariazelle since she was a little kid of four years. She used to come to our estate in Polgahawela with her parents, and even at that tender age she used to sing her heart out to the coconut trees, to our two dogs and to me!! Today she has blossomed to be one of Sri Lanka's topmost female singers in both the Western and Oriental fields.

The fact that she has been able to go on for more than 30 years is an ample testimony to her talent and showmanship. She has travelled all over the world and has built up a large following of fans, as she is very versatile and has a very good rapport with the audience.

I have always enjoyed performing with her. My band, The X-periments has backed her on many a show and readily acknowledge that she is one of Sri Lanka's outstanding performers. It is amazing but true that we both launched our professional singing careers on the same night, performing at the senior and junior talent shows at the Observer Finals at the Coconut Grove. On this great day as she celebrates 30 plus 5 years, all I can do is wish her another 30 plus 5 years.

I am confident that she may even hit a "century" and you can be pretty sure that I will be cheering her from somewhere up there!!!

****

I came to know Mariazelle in 1978 while playing for the Super Golden Chimes. Since then we have been very good friends. She also used to help 'Kings' with new songs those days, as she liked 'Kings' a lot. I am happy that she selected us to back her show.

As many of her original songs are sung by a lot of popular female singers these days, it is a very good idea to feature these same songs on the show so that people will remember their original singer, In my capacity I composed many of her songs, writing and directing music for them.

This time we will have a few members of the band 'Friends in Harmony' as well to give her that extra backing. I wish Mariazelle good luck and hope that all her fans will be there at the BMICH on Wednesday!
