Next, a Buddhist TV network ? by DEEPAL WARNAKULASURIYA Plans are under way to launch Sri Lanka's first ever Buddhist Television (BTV) network with countrywide reach by March, 2004. Several Buddhist prelates and local and international Buddhists are engaged in this project, which aims to portray the true picture of Buddhism and the Buddhist philosophy. "The present norms of communication have completely overlooked the cultural values and have also failed to understand the value and proper usage of electronic media. This inspired us to think about a new channel", Chief Incumbent of the Rangiri Dambulla Vihara the Ven. Inamaluwe Sumangala Nayaka Thera, told the 'Sunday Observer'. He said that all facilities required to run a TV channel had already been met and they were waiting the government approval. The transmission centre for the new station will be in Dambulla, with a co-ordination office in Colombo. "The studios, communication equipment and other infrastructure are already available and we have also produced several programmes to be telecast initially", the Thera said. BTV will telecast news, tele-dramas, musical programs and discussions on a range of topics including the economy, culture, education and social affairs. He stressed that the channel has no political affiliation and telecast of political programs will be restricted. BTV will be a Sinhala channel with sub-titles in English and Tamil for certain programmes. |
