Annual Lightning Safety Recognition Award - 2003 for Dr. Chandima Gomes Dr. Chandima Gomes has been awarded the Annual Lightning Safety Recognition Award by the National Lightning Safety Institute USA. This prestigious honour is awarded annually to one scientist from USA and two scientists from the rest of the world for their contribution to the international advancement of lightning safety issues. In the year 2003 the recipient of the American National award is Dr. Steve Hodanish from NOAA, a pioneer scientist in Lightning Protection in USA. The International honours have been awarded to Dr. Chandima Gomes of Sri Lanka and Dr. Zainal Hartono of Malaysia, one of the best and senior most engineers in Lightning protection in Asia. Dr. Gomes is the first South Asian and also the youngest scientist in the world who has been conferred this award. This year, for the first time the recipients of both international awards are from Asia. Dr. Chandima Gomes, an old Royalist, is a Senior Lecturer attached to the University of Colombo and is also a leading engineer in Lightning Protection in the country. He is the Vice President of the Institute of Physics and a member of the Lightning Physics Research group at the University of Colombo. At present he is engaged with several studies to solve lightning protection problems encountered by Sri Lankan engineers and also plans to start a research project in collaboration with the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to study the adverse effects of lightning to the neighbourhood of communication towers. Dr. Gomes is also the pioneer in Lightning Safety Education in Sri Lanka as well as South Asia. |
