Chris Patten to meet President, PM

The European Union's Commissioner for External Relations Christopher Patten in a statement, who is due to visit Sri Lanka this week has stated that with patience and goodwill from all sides, and the continued support of the international community, including the EU, solutions could be found to Sri Lanka's complex problems.

Patten will arrive in Colombo on November 25 on a two-day visit.

He will hold meetings with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando, Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris, Milinda Moragoda and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem. Patten will also travel to Kilinochchi on Wednesday where he is scheduled to meet LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, S.P. Thamilselvan and Dr. Jay Maheswaran.

He will also address a diplomatic gathering academics and the media on 'Conflict Resolution: Eu experiences.'

UNP rallies today

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will address public meetings organised by the UNP to educate the masses on the current situation of the country, achievements of the UNF Government during past two years and the peace process initiated by the government since it assumed power.

The theme of these public rallies will be " Let us Protect the Country ; Let us Protect the Government."

Meetings will be held at Bandaragama in Kalutara district and Ambalangoda in the Galle district, today. The UNP will have meetings in 16 districts from November 22 to December 9 and the final meeting will be held at Peliyagoda on December 9.

US Navy team here

A 20-member contingent from the United States Navy arrived in Sri Lanka last week to train the Special Boat Squadron of the Sri Lanka Navy.

Four platoons of the navy comprising more than 100 men will undergo comprehensive training in marksmanship, the best and the quickest forms of reaching land from sea and vice versa during confrontations with the enemy, the provision of first-aid for colleagues at times of need.

According to a Navy spokesman, a one month training programme will be conducted in the sea area off Trincomalee and on a substantial perimeter on land.

The programme is a military-to-military activity by the U.S and Sri Lanka Navies to forge closer relations between them.

Kidney patient seeks help

Mrs W.L. Soysa aged 46 at No. 63, Wekada Horana Rd Panadura has chronic renal failure due to diabetic nephropathy, and is at present undergoing maintenance dialysis as a life saving procedure. Dr. Surjith Somiah at Apollo Hospital has recommended renal transplant surgery. She seeks financial assistance for both dialysis and transplant. Contributions can be made to Mrs W.L. Heart surgery

Indika Subasinghe, a student of Keenapelessa Girls School, Hasalaka is suffering from heart problem and has been advised to undergo early Mitral Valve Replacement by Dr. Rajeeva R. Pieris, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Apollo Hospital. The approximate cost of the procedure is Rs. 425,000.

Her parents and school teachers seek generous contribution from the public to save her life. Contributions can be made to A/c No. S.A. 2008, Bank of Ceylon, Hasalaka.

Treatment for abdominal cancer

Seven-years and eight months-old S. H. Maneesha Pabothani Ranasinghe of U.M.U. Road, Kalpitiya is suffering from abdominal cancer (Neuroblastoma), and her doctors have advised her parents to take her to Paediatric Oncologist/Haematologist at John Hunter Children's Hospital Australia, for treatment.

The treatment procedure is estimated to cost Rs. 7,000,000 (seventy lakhs) which the parents cannot afford. They appeal to the public to help them save the child. Donations can be made to Bank of Ceylon Kalpitiya Branch account no 8370 Maneesha Pabothani Aid.
