National govt. : No deterrent to SLFP-JVP alliance by Deepal Warnakulasuriya President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's invitation to the UNF and other political parties to form a government of a national reconstruction and reconciliation will not deter the proposed SLFP-JVP alliance. MoU alliance will be signed soon according to SLFP spokesman and Chief Opposition Whip Mangala Samaraweera. Samaraweera refused to divulge the proposed alliance, saying that they had pledged not to go public with details. The 'Sunday Observer' learns that the SLFP will decide on the date at its Central Committee meeting scheduled for tomorrow and then communicate with the JVP. PA MP Nimal Siripala de Silva, one of the members of the Committee appointed by the President to work out a draft constitution for the alliance said that they had the draft finalised, but refused to comment further but confirmed that a meeting of both parties will be held later this week to decide on date to sign the MoU. Meanwhile, JVP Parliamentary team leader Wimal Weerawansa said they had agreed to compromise on several issues that were stumbling blocks in the previous rounds of talks. He stressed that the JVP Political Bureau is ready to sign an MoU at any time and that would be the best way to save the country from betrayal and separation. Questioned about the President's invitation to all parties to form a national government of reconstruction and reconciliation, he said they had never been in agreement with the UNP and that their stance will not change in the future. |
