England cricketers make guest appearance at children's cricket tourney On the 24th of November, 36 children from Trincomalee, Puttalam and Colombo will be competing for the VSO Peace Shield at the Rifle Green grounds of the Air Force Headquarters (opposite the Trans Asia Hotel). The tournament has been organised by the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in conjunction with the British High Commission. This six-a-side cricket tournament is unique in every sense as it will bring together some of the most disadvantaged 10-11 year old girls and boys from Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala communities of the areas. The tournament will not just provide the children with an opportunity to be part of a memorable event in Colombo, but has also been designed to encourage community harmony and friendship. Each team will be made up from members of different ethnic communities from each town. The highlight of the event will be an appearance by members of the touring England cricket team. The cricketers will join the children between 3.30 pm until 4.30 to watch the games, handout the shield to the winners and certificates to all of the children who participated. In order to give the children a memorable experience, a 3-day programme has been arranged. This will include peace building games and activities on the 23rd November and a tour of Colombo with a visit to the National Zoological Gardens on the 25th November. The children have been selected by three organisations that VSO volunteers are currently working in the Department of Social Services in Trincomalee, Child Vision in Puttalam and Ahimsa in Colombo. VSO is an international development charity that works through overseas volunteers, and currently has over 40 volunteers in Sri Lanka working with local organisations in the sectors of mental health, disability, education and with people affected by the conflict. VSO volunteers are professionals, recruited in Canada, Kenya, the Netherlands, the Philippines and the UK. |
