Satisfying performance by Anura Rohana

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka's professional golfer, Anura Rohana, fared exceptionally well at the US Dollars 500,000 Volvo China Open of the APGA Tour in Shanghai last week. He finished 25th out of 145 top professionals and earned himself about Rs. 450,000.

Rohana had a total of 290 with rounds of 75, 72, 72, 71 - Thirteen strokes behind the ultimate winner from China who had 277 (67, 69, 69, 72). Rohana had nine birdies - two in the first and second rounds, one in the third and four in the fourth. There were players from China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, USA, South Korea, Philippines and some other countries.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer on his return to Sri Lanka from China on Tuesday (November 18) Rohana said that it was "very cold" in Shanghai (six degrees) and he was forced to wear six shirts, extra slacks and even gloves to hold off the cold. He is now scheduled to travel to Hong Kong to compete in the US Dollars 700,000 Omega Hong Kong Open to be staged at the Hong Kong Golf Club from December 4 to 7.

Earlier this year, Anura Rohana, was 14th at the Royal Challenge Indian Open in Delhi and 42nd at the Myanmar Open in Yangen, but missed the "cut" at the Thailand Open, Qatar Masters and Macao Open.

Then on the Hero Honda Golf Tour in India, Rohana, fared very well, finishing 9th at the Hero Honda Open in Bangalore and 9th at the Kashmir Open in Srinigar, though missing the "cut" at the TNGF Open in Chennai.
