Jackie Dias - a girl to watch in golf A talented youngster with a very bright future ahead of her on the amateur golf circuit is 22-year-old Jackie Dias, who has already won two major titles within the space of a couple of months and eyeing her third at the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship which started yesterday in Nuwara Eliya. Jackie won the Royal Colombo Golf Club's Ladies Championship in September and followed it up with the Mackwoods-Sri Lanka Ladies Stroke-Play Championship too. Both triumphs were on the Ridgeways and at the moment she is in Nuwara-Eliya practising hard to have a "crack" at the Sri Lanka Amateur Title. She was persuaded to take to Golf by her father Pat Dias, and uncle Major General (Dr) C. Thurairajah, who is a triple international. Jackie was 15-years then and now seven years later, she has been gradually climbing the ladder of success. Playing off a handicap of 7, Jackie, first started learning the "strokes" under veteran K. A. Nandasena Perera, but since then has not taken "any lessons" from any person though getting useful "tips" from RCGC's professional Pheroze Billimoria and Anura Rohana, who is playing on the Asian Professional Circuit. Jackie said that she enjoys playing golf and regularly plays with the caddies at the Ridgeways. An old girl of Bishop's College, Elizabeth Moir School and Sheffield International, her first success was when she beat a former national champion Yvonne Abhayaratne to take the Pam Fernando trophy three years back. She has also played at the Royal Calcutta Open in 2001 and Malaysia Amateur Championship in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year without success, but eyes the Sri Lanka Amateur title this year. (L.G.) |
