funeral of swimming coach Shirley de S. Abeysena today Shirley de S. Abeysena who was a 'livewire' in Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports, died last Friday, aged 72 years. He died of a heart attack at a private hospital. The late Shirley was a founder-member of the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association and will be best remembered for his great contribution to the sport in producing some top class swimmers. He coached the swimmers at S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia, St. Joseph's College, Bishop's College and Otter Aquatic Club. Some of his swimmers went on to represent Sri Lanka. A product of De La Salle College, Mutwal and St. Benedict's College, Kotahena, Shirley was a top sportsman during his school days. He served as Assistant Treasurer (1973-1974) and Treasurer (1975-1990) and acted as Secretary on several occasions of the Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association. He was the Chief Petty Officer and the Chief Physical Training Instructor of the Sri Lanka Navy. Shirley leaves behind his wife Patricia and children Sharmalie, Nilanthie, Janaki and Dushantha. Funeral takes place at Madampitiya Cemetery at 3.30 p.m. today. (L.F.) |
