Diya Kowulla docks at Colombo Port The Port of Colombo received its brand new grab hopper named 'Diya Kowulla' recently. Ports and Shipping Minister Rauff Hakeem was the chief guest at the event. The dredger was built by IHC Holland, one of the largest dredger builders in the world, for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority at a cost of Rs 473 million. Funding included an outright grant from the Netherlands government to Sri Lanka which covered 25 per cent of the cost. The Diya Kowulla is 45 metres in length, 12 metres in breadth and 3.5 metres in depth. It will replace the old grab hopper dredger 'Kakuluwa' built in 1965. It has a laden speed of nine knots. The new vessel is of the twin screw self propulsion type carrying a hopper capacity of 300m. It has a deck mounted type grab crane which is capable of dredging silt, clay, sand, gravel or corals from sea bottoms upto a depth of 20m using a grab and filling into its hopper. The dredged soil collected in the hopper is transported to the dumping site and discharged from the bottom of the hopper via hydraulically operated six bottom doors arranged in two equal routes located at the bottom. |
