Music a way of life

By Umangi de Mel

The rock revolution continues to rule the local music scene. It's become a way of life for most of the young and the restless. And it's also become a crisis to the rest...rock revolves around a lot of young lives.. oh, and it seems to have turned a new leaf in their lives as well...giving them a true identity..

Identity Crisis semed kinda appropriate since we still don't know who we really are and it really is a crisis," says the four piece outfit that claim to play punk music.

The band comprises Mario on lead vocals and lead guitars, Randall on guitar, Sujeeva on bass and Milan on drums. The guys have formed the band two months back and decide to go serious, "Three of us are from the same school and have played for school functions before forming Identity Crisis. We decided to play punk cause there's a scarcity in punk bands at the moment. We see a hell of a lot of metal bands and few a grunge but punk's like so forgotten which is why we chose it plus, we want people on foot and on head," they say.

Giving the public more information about the two months old outfit, its members say that they prefer covers like Blink 182, Green day, Simple plan and a bit of Old school, "Although we mainly concentrate on `Punk', we actually play a little bit of everything at times if the crowd's a good sport."

Mario informs that they haven't played as a band in public except for a couple of times at house parties. We hope to do a gig in January," they say adding that practicing at the moment is quite tough since the four of them have given priority to their studies as well. The guys have completed two original tracks called Aint so simple and Late late show and reveal that they are working on the rest.

Aint so simple which was written and composed during a free period in school , talks about life, its many ups and downs and friends we meet. Late late show is about a kid who gets caught red handed watching an `adult movie' to his parents. Our originals vary from each other, we write about a lot of things such as booze, sex and many more . Our mission is to do more originals and reduce playing covers," they say.

Identity Crisis seems to have a soft spot for old rock 'n roll tunes, "We take the oldies and give them a new beat and turn it into `Punk', that way we satisfy both young and the old plus my mom likes old stuff, " cracks Randall and adds that they aren't fully backed by the families, "Yet somehow we try to keep it together."

Talking about crowd support, the guys say that everyone at school egg them on, "We haven't been bottled, hooted or thrashed by the audience. We are so grateful to our school and it's them who encouraged us to come this far," they say revealing how they get blasted trying to jam at school.

Speaking of Rock Company, they say that Ajith Perera's been a great help, "We're registered with Rock Company but haven't auditioned as yet. Nevertheless, we hope that we get more experience through Rock Company in the near future."

They say that they hope to release their debut album at the beginning of January, "All punk lovers watch out for a major outburst in punk music," they holler. "Bands like Stigmata, Independent Square have great talent in music and we are hoping to fit that level. The local rock music scene has come a long, fruitful way and we're glad to be part of it."[ The four talk about the things that keep them alive, "Music gets the stress off you, it's a way of life, especially Punk music has the ability to talk about simpler things like fun, fantasies, joy and the down side of life."

Wrapping things up Identity Crisis say that they'd like to forge ahead and promote more originals, "We'll stick together and take the band to a higher level in the rock music industry. We're still learning but we want to be able to reach the level of releasing our own album, hopefully this year."
