Dhammika killing suspect remanded by Sarath Malalasekera The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) investigating the killing of underworld gang leader Dhammika Amarasinghe alias Dhammika Perera at the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court premises on Friday, produced the assailant Siriwardanage Chaminda Udaya Kumara alias Army Chaminda, father of two, before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya yesterday. He was remanded till January 23. Dhammika was killed while he was being taken out of Court No. 6 immediately after his case, a double murder, was postponed for January 23. Investigations led by CCD Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda revealed that while the suspect held an outsider as hostage and attempted to escape after the shooting, an Army corporal who was on guard duty near the Supreme Court Complex arrived at the scene hearing the gunshot. The Army corporal managed to disarm the suspect. With the assistance of two policemen who were on duty, the corporal was able to apprehend the suspect and hand him over to the police at the court premises. ASP Ravindra Karawita, Chief Inspector Nuwan Wedasinghe, OIC, CCD and a special team of the CCD assist in the investigations directed by its Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda. |
