Bishop of Anuradhapura consecrated Consecration of the Bishop elect Very Rev. Fr. Norbert M. Andradi OMI took place at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Anuradhpura amidst a gathering of a large crowed including Apostolic Nuncio Thomas Ye, a number of Buddhist Monks and other religious dignitaries. Colombo Archbishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis officiated at the ceremony assisted by Chilaw Bishop Rt. Rev Dr. Frank Marcus Fernando and Mannar Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph. Members of the Catholic Bishops Conference Sri Lanka were present at the ceremony and the homilies were delivered in Sinhala by Kandy Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Vianny Fernando and in Tamil by Jaffna Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam. The New Bishop of Anuradhapura has chosen "Esse Semper Viator Cum Populo Dei" ("Always a Pilgrim Traveller with the People of God") as his service Motto. His Holiness Pope John Paul II on Friday, November 11, appointed Very Rev. Fr. Norbert M. Andradi OMI as the new Bishop of Diocese of Anuradhapura to fill the vacancy created by the moving of the then Bishop of Anuradhapura Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis as the Archbishop of Colombo, filling the vacancy in Colombo Archdiocese with the resignation of the then Archbishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando. The Bishop Elect was ordained a priest by then Colombo Archbishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando on May 10, 1980 at the Church of Infant Jesus, Kalamulla, his home town. His first priestly appointment was to serve at the Diocese of Anuradhapura, which now he Heads as the Shepherd of His flock, which comes to just one per cent of the total population of two districts Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. |
