Ranapala Bodinagoda remembered

The third death anniversary of former ANCL Chairman Ranapala Bodinagoda fell on Friday. 

Mr. Bodinagoda was ANCL Chairman for 11 years from 1977 to 1989 and it was the longest period a chairman had served at the institution. 

He died at the age of 85 on 9th January 2001.

 

Ceremonies to transfer merit on Ven. Soma Thera

A Dhamma Desana and a Bodhi Pooja will be held at the Vagiragnana Dharmayatanaya, Maharagama on January 12 at 6.00 pm to transfer merit on late Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera one month from Ven. Thera's passing away in Russia. The religious functions are organised by Ven. Maharagama Sumanasiri Thera.

Rukmani Devi's 81st birthday celebration

On Thursday, January 15, at 5.pm fans of late film actress and vocalist Rukmani Devi will gather at her statue at Tudella, to celebrate her 81st birthday, organised by the Lions Club of Colombo Maitland, District 306 C in association with Ms. Leela Kottegoda, her life-long friend and fan.

Rukmani Devi died under tragic circumstances 25 years ago on October 28, 1978 when she met with a motor accident at Tudella Junction, Jaela.

On her 81st birthday, the organisers have decided to unveil the wrought iron-grill guard which will give protection to her memorial at Tudella junction. Ms. Kottegoda who was responsible in placing her life-size statue has received financial support from Shiran Garment Chairman Mark Fernando to cover the cost of the protective fence. She has also received financial help from Lion Reginald of the Lions Club of Colombo Maitland to organise Rukmani Devi's 81st birthday ceremony.

The organisers cordially invite all fans of Rukmani to attend this ceremony to keep alive her memory in the "now" generation.

Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Resettlement Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardane and Jaela Urban Council Chairman Ernest Fernando will be the guests of honour.

Church's 125th year

The Methodist Church, Moratumulla, Moratuwa celebrates its 125th jubilee today, January 11. Built in memory of the founding father of the Methodist church in Moratuwa, Rev. Peter Gerad De Silva it is one of the important monuments in the area. With a membership of about 1,800 it has contributed much to the community and the country for the past 125 years, said Mihiri Salgado, Superintendent Minister.

A service of thanksgiving, conducted by Noel P. Fernando, President of the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka will be held at 5.00 p.m. to mark the jubilee. A fellowship dinner will follow. Many other events including a 3 day revival service and a camp fire will continue through the month.
