PM's statement at Panduwasnuwara baseless, irrelevant - President by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Presidential Secretariat sources said that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was of the view that the statement Prime Minister made at a public meeting at Panduwasnuwara last week was baseless and irrelevant. Presidential Secretariat sources said that it was the view of the President that the peace process was not something that should be handled by one single person, but it was an exercise that needed a joint effort. These sources accused the UNF Government of making the situation of the peace process worse than what it was before by allowing it to be handled by three people in the Government. The sources pointed that at no stage were details of the process reported either to the President or the Cabinet. " The Parliament and the general public knew nothing. It was something very `exclusive', but what the public wanted was to make the issue `inclusive,' so that all are participants in the process". The Presidential Secretariat added that President Kumaratunga's efforts to include a Presidential representative was turned down by the government and so far the Prime Minister had failed to answer the letter sent by the President pointing out the weaknesses in the MoU. |
