Tyronne backed by President President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga urged the SAARC nations to support Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando's candidature for the post of UN Secretary General. President Kumaratunga made this appeal at the 12th SAARC Summit concluded in Islamabad last week. Meanwhile Foreign Minister Fernando made an announcement in Islamabad that the SAARC would seek observer status at the United Nations and this would give the organisation a higher profile at the world body. |
