LTTE in warm pow-wow with Jaffna Army chief

The newly appointed Jaffna Army Commander Major General Susil Chandrapala had a cordial meeting with the LTTE's Jaffna political wing leader Chemmanan at the SLMM's office in the peninsula on Friday.

According to informed sources this was the first meeting Major Gen. Chandrapala had with the LTTE leaders in Jaffna since he became the Northern commander last month. LTTE's Jaffna political wing representatives pledged their support to the new commander in maintaining law and order in the region. They also appealed to the commander to expedite the re-settling of displaced civilians in the North and to help re-open schools.

Maj. Gen. Chandrapala gave a patient hearing and told them he would take up the mattes pointed out by them to his superiors.

He also urged the LTTE to support the ceasefire and to cooperate with the forces in preventing conflicts between both sides, sources said.
