Centurions Arnold and Kaluwitharana help Western Province to 423/3

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Test 'discard' Russel Arnold (111 not out) and Romesh Kaluwitharana (149 not out) hit centuries, sharing an unfinished fourth wicket partnership of 278 to put Western Province in a strong position on the second day of their Inter-provincial cricket match against Uva Province played at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Khettarama yesterday.

Uva were dismissed for 235 on the first day and Western Province who were 55 for 1 overnight went on to make 423 for 3 at the end of the day with a lead of 188 runs.

The overnight unbeaten Pradeep Hewage and Jehan Mubarak added 122 for the second wicket with both completing half centuries before they were dismissed at the same total 145 for 3.

Chaminda Vaas claimed two wickets and Upul Chandana took one, but thereafter it was a hard toil for the bowlers on a featherbed pitch where the two most experienced batsmen reigned supreme, striking the ball to all parts of the fast outfield.

Arnold who was unbeaten on 111 had faced 174 deliveries with 15 fours and a six while Kaluwitharana who reached the three figure mark first had faced 229 balls striking 18 fours and a six in his unbeaten 149. The 278-run partnership came off 401 balls.

Uva Province 235 (Avishka Gunawardena 89, Dilhara Fernando 4 for 33).

Western Province 55 for 1 overnight 423 for 3 at stumps in 101 overs (Pradeep Hewage 64, Jehan Mubarak 61, Russel Arnold 111 n.o, Romesh Kaluwitharana 149 n.o, Chaminda Vaas 2 for 66, Upul Chandana 1 for 112).

North Central Province 365 and 142 for 3 at close (Mahela Jayawardena 42 not out, T. M. Dilshan 42 not out, Charitha Buddika 2 for 35).
