Ananda stalled by Thomians in attempt for outright win

by LAL GUNASEKERA

Ananda were stalled in their attempt to get an outright win over S. Thomas' in their schools cricket match at Ananda Mawatha yesterday by a sound knock of 86 by Kaushal Silva who helped the Thomians to make 160 for 5 in their follow-on after making only 180 in their first innings in reply to Ananda's 371 for 8 declared.

The stocky Silva stroked 14 boundaries and a six as well in his knock, but was deprived of a well deserved century when he was out with just two overs remaining. In their first innings, Sanjeev Mendis top scored for the Thomians with an unbeaten 59 with seven fours and a six.

Ananda: 371 for 8 declared (D. Kularatne 104, I. Boteju 78, M. Udawatte 29, T. Kumarasinghe 72, R. Wimaladharma 21, N. Adams 5 for 66, W. Balasubramaniam 2 for 105).

S. Thomas': 180 (N. Perera 33, Sanjeev Mendis not out 59, S. Kularatne 16, A. Ranasinghe 4 for 59, A. Ranawaka 2 for 17, R. Wimaladharma 2 for 24) and 160 for 5 at close (S. Warnakulasuriya 30, A. Perera 18, Kaushal Silva 86, Sanjeev Mendis 18, D. Ratnayake not out 11, S. Senanayake 2 for 39, A. Ranasinghe 3 for 44).
