Sports festival on Jan 18 to celebrate Thai Pongal by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Correspondent The Ministry of Education of the Central Province in conjunction with the Nuwara Eliya Pradeshiya Sabha, Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat, Police Stations of Agrapathana and Lindula and the Plantation Management companies has organised a massive sports festival in connection with the Thai Pongal on Sunday, January 18 at Glenline grounds, Agrapatana commencing from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. This will be the biggest ever sports festival to be held in the salubrious plantation township of Agrapatana which borders the Horton Plains or the World's End as it is popularly known. The Diyagama East Estate in Agrapatana falls into the Horton Plains. Among the major events will be a cycle race, marathon, fire works display and a musical show, cricket and volleyball tournaments. The cycle race will carry a first prize of Rs. 5,000, the second prize Rs. 3,000 and the third prize Rs. 2,000 and a further cash awards of Rs. 1,000 each to the next seven finishing among the first ten. Similar cash prizes will also be awarded for the marathon. The winners of the cricket and volleyball tournaments will be awarded the first prize of cash Rs. 5,000, second prize Rs. 3,000 and the third prize Rs. 2,000. In addition to this there will be 32 sports events and 8 cultural events with all carrying cash prizes. |
