A. Ratnayake MMV revives cricket after 40 years, but funds urgently needed to carry on!

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr.

A. Ratnayake Madhya Maha Vidyalaya in Menikhinna, formerly known as the Wallala Central College has revived senior cricket after a lapse of over 40 years. This year, they will be playing in the Schools Lemonade Trophy cricket tournament.

This school had a brief spell in cricket in the late fifties and early sixties when the exhorbitant cost of playing the game put them off the field. This year, the parents of the cricketers with support from the school are endeavouring their best in fielding a cricket team. But funds are hard to come by. They deserve a helping hand.

The cricketers and the parents pay for the ground fees, umpires fees and even the cost of travelling and for the meals. The parents are not from the affluent class and it is not known how long they could proceed. They are hoping that some sports benefactor comes their way to help. However, the parents are keen that the game must restart and all indications are that they will not allow it to die a natural death.

The team is led by medium-pacer and hard-hitting bat Saman Abeyratne who did well at the junior level cricket. Another medium-pacer Mahes Jayawickrema is the vice-captain of the side and is also a good batsman.

Apart from this duo, the other capable batsmen in the side are: Chandana Warusawitharne, Roshan Wijesekera, Sameera Ranatunga, Sanjeewa Senaratne, Sanjeewa Ratnayake, Nalin Gamage, Dhamitha Mudalige and Dharshana Keerthisinghe.

The bowling is opened by Saman Abeyratne and Nalin Gamage. The other medium pacers in the side are: Mahes Jayawickrema, Sanjeewa Senaratne and Prasad Dharshana who will also open the attack.

The spinners are: Chandana Warusawitharne (off-spin), Sameera Ranatunga (off-spin), Sanjeewa Ratnayake (off-spin) and Dhammika Mudalige (leg-spin). Roshan Wijesekera is the 'stumper' of the side.

The others in the pool are: Lakmal Rathnage, Chandana Tillakaratne, Dushantha Samaratunga, Nishantha Jayasundera, Madhusanka Ranasinghe, Priyantha Kuruppu, Eranda Weerabahu, Srimal Randeniya and S. K. Delungahawatte.

The team is coached by former Antonian cricketer Dinuk Wijeratne with U. K. Senanayake as Master-in-Charge. Mrs. Thamara Weerasinghe is the Prefect of Games.
