Under 21 Junior National Netball Tourney in Matale by LESLIE FERNANDO The Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka (ICNFSL) has decided to hold its first tournament for this year (under-21 Junior National Netball Championships) in the second week in February in Matale according to Ms. Yasmin Dharmaratne, the Secretary of ICNFSL. Ms. Dharmaratne told the Sunday Observer that this tournament will be a vital one as the best players will be picked for the Junior National pool in preparation for several international tournaments to be held during this year. "We expect a record number of teams to play in this tournament and we are bound to find hidden talent from various outstation teams participating in the tournament", said the Interim Committee Secretary. The Interim Committee will shortly pick a Junior National netball coach to be in charge of the junior netballers. Applications closed yesterday (Saturday, January 10). Most qualified coaches with international experience, local experience and the performance of the applicants from year 2000 to 2003 will be taken into consideration in the selection. Around seven or eight nominees will be for the final interview and the final selectee's names will be sent to the Minister of Sports for his approval. After the Junior National coach is selected, the Interim Committee of the netball Federation of Sri Lanka will be looking to select a coach for the Senior National team as well and will advertise for the post. According to Milton Amerasinghe, Director General, Ministry of Youth Affairs, the ministry has no authority of appointing junior or senior national coaches directly. "But we have to follow the procedure it means the controlling body or an interim committee first has to select a coach and submit the name to the Minister for his approval. |
