Anatoly Karpov chess club can be satisfied with work done The Anatoly Karpov Chess Club celebrated the 5th anniversary with their gala awards night at the BMICH with over 500 players receiving their awards. At the awards ceremony, there was Deputy High Commissioner for India Mr. Mohan Kumar, MP Dinesh Gunawardena, Mr. N.G. Punchihewa - Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Principal of Royal Mr. Upali Gunasekera and Mr. Mikhail Ustinov - Director of the Russian Centre who graced the occasion. The Anatoly Karpov Chess Club can look back with some satisfaction that the club was responsible in taking the game of chess to outstation towns and making it popular with the rural folk. Officials said that over 100 chess coaching camps were held islandwide in far away places like Weli-oya, Thanamalwila, Hingurakgoda, Jaffna, Nochchiyagama, Akuressa to name just a few of the places where the game was introduced. Besides conducting the elementary classes for beginners, there were advanced coaching camps held with the support of the Russian, Yugoslavian and Indian Grand Masters and International Masters who upgraded the knowledge of the players. The club also conducted All-Island Age Group Tournament, Tean Tournament, Women's Tournament and Veterans Tournaments too. Literature on chess and chess boards too were distributed to many institutions and schools. The Anatoly Karpov Chess Club also sent Sri Lankans abroad for international events and also brought down foreign players and experts to popularise the sport here in Sri Lanka. |
