President concerned on security of N-E candidates

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has instructed the Army Commander to ensure the security of the candidates, following the killings of an UNP candidate and EPDP cadre in the East last week.

President has also directed the Defence Secretary Cyril Herath to request the SLMM to take medidate measurers to prevent the LTTE killing the candidates contesting the forthcoming polls, in the North and the East. (AP)

State media under scrutiny

Election Commissioner (EC) is to appoint a Competent Authority (CA) to monitor State media during the Election Campaign.

At a meeting the Secretaries of the recognised political parties at his office on February 27, Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake said that he has decided to appoint a Competent Authority in the coming week to study how the State media is being made use of during the campaign since his office is getting flooded with complaints from various quarters.

He said that he has arrived at the decision to appoint an Authority, by the powers vested in him under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution. Sources said that similar meetings would be held every Friday until the election is over.

A-9 Highway still wide open

The A-9 highway which connects the Jaffna Peninsula with rest of the Island will still remain open despite the current crisis within the LTTE, media spokesman of the organisation Daya Master said. According to Daya Master all the activities of the LTTE in Kilinochchi and other areas in the North and the East will not be affected. He also pointed out that the LTTE hierarchy was very particular that the current

situation should not jeopardise the normalcy and the ceasefire in the North and the East.

ITN goes international

In celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the introduction of Television to Sri Lanka Independent Television Network Ltd., the pioneering television station in Sri Lanka in collaboration with TV Lanka the pioneering satellite TV station in Sri Lanka will provide regular viewing pleasure of special ITN Programmes to the expatriate Sri Lankans around the world from 9 p.m. to 12 midnight daily.

Lakshman Kadirgamar Minister of Information and Telecommunications will ceremonially inaugurate the ITN World Service and Lakhanda Radio World Service on March 8 (tomorrow) at 8.45 p.m. at the TV Lanka Studio Complex, No. 68, Aththidiya Road, Ratmalana.

Public assistance needed

Master R.S. Kathriarachchi (13 years) Uurupelawwa, Kuruwita has Atrial Septal Defect (ASD-hole in the heart) which needs Surgical Closure by open heart surgery.

The patient's relatives are exploring the possibility of performing this operation at Apollo Hospital, with assistance from the President's Fund. Well wishers and the general public.

The President's Fund will release up to a maximum of Rs. 1,40,000. The approximate package cost of this operation at the Apollo Hospital is Rs. 240,000.

The patient's relatives are trying to raise funds with public assistance so that this operation can be done early.

They would be most grateful for any assistance in this matter.

SLAF: 'Fly now, pay now'

"The Air Force do not have a package deal to `Fly Now and Pay Later' to hire aircraft on commercial basis as reported in a weekend newspaper, Air Force commander, Air Marshal Donald Perera told the Sunday Observer and pointed out that a clearance from the Defence Ministry must be obtained.

The cost is a standard rate approved by the Ministry, Air Marshal Perera said. (AN)

UPFA Manifesto out on Friday

The policy statement (Election Manifesto) of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will be released at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) on Friday, March 12 at 10 a.m. according to UPFA sources.
