Niluka will boost Sri Lanka's chances

by LAL GUNASEKERA

Sri Lanka's reigning national champion, Niluka Karunaratne, who is presently attached to Malaysia's National Badminton Training Centre in Kuala Lumpur, for a period of one-and-half years, may shift to South Korea if negotiations currently going on prove fruitful.

The President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), Riza Jumar, said that Karunaratne who is presently ranked No 157 by the International Badminton Federation (IBF), will continue with his overseas training and will be available to represent Sri Lanka at International tournaments.

Karunaratne fared quite well at the recent Thomas Cup, though failing to win, and will return to Colombo on March 21 to continue with his training with Sri Lanka's shuttlers for the forthcoming South Asian Federation (SAF) Games to be staged in Isalamabad, Pakistan later this month.

The Sri Lanka team consisting of six men and five women will come under Malaysia's Vernu Gopal who will be here today (Sunday) for a period of 10 days.
