Qantas - Catalina Memorial....

When the Australian and Sri Lanka cricketers go to Galle for the first Test which starts on March 8, a plaque will be unveiled at Lighthouse Hotel, Galle.

Mr. David Binns - the High Commissioner for Australia in Sri Lanka will unveil the plaque at the Hotel at 2 pm today, March 7 and both teams will be present.

Cricket Australia Deputy Chairman Bob Horsell and Jack Clarke third in command will also grace the occasion.

Sri Lanka Cricket Manager Ajith Jayasekera, Chairman of Selectors Lalith Kaluperuma and Air Force Commander Donald Perera too will be present along with Regional Manager of Qantas South East Asia.

The plaque reads:

"During World War II vital refuelling bases were 'Empire Router' from Australia to England via Singapore to keep communications open for two years commencing on 29 June 1943 Qantas Empire Airways operated the longest regular non-stop service - Perth to Ceylon - a distance of 3,573 miles (5,632 kilometres).

The initial services were operated by Catalina flying which flew into and out of Perth from this point Swan River known as the 'Flight of the Sunrise.' These missions were flown in complete silence and without any radio navigation aids.

The story of the Indian Ocean services is one of over adversity and the highest standards of endeavour."
