Ambuja appointed 'Resource Partner' to Vocational Training Authority

Ceylon Ambuja Cements (Pvt) Ltd., a subsidiary of the Indian cement giant Gujarat Ambuja, has been designated a "Resource Partner" to the Vocational Training Authority (VTA) of the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training, enabling the latter to offer the Ambuja's technical expertise to its students in many parts of Sri Lanka.

The two organisations entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last week, formalising an exemplary public-private sector partnership under which Ambuja Cements - the only cement company in Sri Lanka with its own Technical Services Department - will be responsible for a training module in the VTA's popular courses on construction and masonry.

Commenting on this latest Corporate Social Responsibility Project of his company, Ceylon Ambuja Cements Director/CEO M.C. Ramakrishna said: "Ambuja is committed to promote professionalism at mason's level in the construction industry in order to maintain the highest standards in this vital field. We also believe strongly in enriching the community with which we are closely involved."

Vocational Training Authority Chairman Akram Rajabdeen said: "The VTA is playing a crucial role in preparing the youth of this country for gainful employment. This also benefits the private sector. This voluntary contribution by Ambuja of its expertise and time is an example for other private sector organisations."

He said all VTA courses including those on masonry have been designed to provide the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence that makes participants employable.

Ambuja's expertise in this field would provide those who complete the VTA courses with an edge over others entering the construction field.

Students who complete either a one-year course on Construction or a six-month course on Masonry organise by the VTA would be eligible to follow the specialised training module by Ceylon Ambuja Cements.

The programmes will be conducted by the company's Technical Services Department and would cover key aspects of masonry including the proper usage of cement in the construction of the foundation, concreting, plastering and tiling.

Ceylon Ambuja Cements which received ISO 9001:2000 certification for all its local operations, is the only company to offer an advisory service in Sri Lanka through its own Technical Services Department.

The department provides a range of services to contractors and house builders for their construction activities and technical advice on the usage of cement for maximum strength. The company operates its own laboratories in Colombo and Galle, service of which are available free of charge to all Ambuja customers and house builders. The Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka was established in 1995 to provide vocational training to school leavers in the country.

The authority conducts its training programmes at 17 District Vocational Training Centres and 32 Rural Vocational Training Centres.

The authority also arranges in-plant training for those following VTA programmes at manufacturing plants of a number of reputed organisations.
