Millennium IT offers 'schols' to Moratuwa Varsity students

Senior students at Moratuwa University now have the opportunity to receive real world training and on the job experience as part of a scholarship scheme launched by Millennium Information Technologies, Lanka's leading software manufacturer.

Millennium IT announced on Friday that it would offer up to four scholarships to final and penultimate year students of the University's Computer Science and Electronics departments.

The scholarships offer internship and training at Millennium IT's corporate headquarters at Malambe, with students receiving mentoring and advice from some of Sri Lanka's top software engineers. It also includes sponsorship of students' final-year projects. With expert guidance and financial support from Millennium IT, scholarship holders will be able to develop more ambitious, technically advanced projects.

The scheme is intended to benefit not only students, but also the Lankan software industry and the national economy.

"There is an urgent need to ensure that Sri Lankan university graduates have the right competencies to make them employable, especially in the private sector," a Millennium IT spokesperson explained. "Right now there's a considerable disjunct between the needs of industry and the skill sets of graduates. By exposing undergrads to the world of industry and business, we raise their consciousness of the working skills they will need after they graduate."

The new scholarship scheme is only the latest of numerous combined initiatives undertaken by Millennium IT and the University since 1996. Nearly a third of Millennium IT staff, and almost half its software engineers, are Moratuwa graduates. The new scheme was the brainchild of Millennium IT's CEO/Managing Director, Tony Weerasinghe, and Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Dean of Moratuwa University's Engineering Faculty. "We are grateful that the industry is helping us assist our talented undergraduates," says Prof. Ranasinghe.

Tony Weeresinghe said Millennium IT was happy to be a part of the sponsorship scheme. "So many excellent students have to drop out of the university due to financial difficulties," said Mr. Weeresinghe. "Sri Lanka has many brilliant minds but few resources to develop them. This scheme helps us identify some of the best, and helps them achieve their full potential."

The first two scholarships were awarded to Indika Meedeniya and Chamikara Jayalath.
