Lanka's 'Father of Packaging' dead Johan Selin, an International Trade Centre (ICT) Geneva packaging consultant, revered unanimously as "Sri Lanka's Father of Packaging," for services he had rendered in developing the packaging industry, here, passed away in Geneva, recently. Asian Packaging Federation (APF) President Dharmatilake Ratnayake, announced this in Colombo, last week. Selin, was also much admired and esteemed as the 'father of packaging' of Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, for services he had rendered. He is also hailed throughout Asia, including India. Johan Selin, came to Sri Lanka in 1974 when the local packaging industry was in its infancy, and wrapping was virtually, the only form of packaging, known here. Selin, when he was principal advisor on export packaging for ITC, proposed the merger of the local packaging industry, to form the Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging (SLIP). Then, he persuaded the authorities of the time to set up a national focal point for packaging. This led to the Export Promotion Secretariat, the forerunner to the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, establishing the National Packaging Centre (NPC), the nation's research arm of its packaging industry. Selin, visited Sri Lanka on many occasions, and passed on his expertise to the local packaging fraternity. In recent years, he was unheard of in this part of the world, perhaps due to advanced years. The local packaging industry is spoken of as the island's most developed industry and many SLIP members have won Asian Star and World Star packaging awards, over the years. |
