David Pieris gives exhaustive details

In response to the article titled "David Pieris ready to fight" that appeared in the Sunday Observer of 29.02.04 (Outlook, page 29) with reference to the Sunday Observer investigation "Three wheeler import ban up in smoke?" on 15.02.04 (Outlook, page 29) David Pieris Motor Company Ltd. (DPMC) wrote at length to clarify that "24 per cent of the older in-use fleet failed to meet the standard of 6.0 per cent v/v in respect of CO emissions and 9000 ppm v/v in respect of HC emissions.

The AirMAC officials, confirmed their position as follows: "the AirMAC tested randomly selected 204 three wheelers when deciding on the emission standards.

"Out of the total of 204, 23 per cent (48) could not meet such standard and in fact five per cent of them had to be withdrawn from the active service as upgrading the technology was not possible with them."

The Ministry spokesman further said that only 23 per cent failing to meet the lax standard of 9000 ppm v/v means that almost every three wheeler met this standard and introduction of the standards brought no change.

He added that if they had introduced 7500 ppm v/v nearly 40 per cent of three wheelers could have failed to meet the emission standards.
