EC to summon media heads

Elections Commissioner (EC) Dayananda Dissanayake will summon the private media heads for a meeting on Tuesday, March 23, along with the leaders of the political parties and State media heads to find out how the private media institutions should observe the guidelines issued by him.

At a meeting held on Friday, March 19 with the heads of political parties at his office, President's Counsel Wijedasa Rajapakse representing the Freedom Alliance, took up the issue to appoint a Competent Authority to the State media, and informed the Commissioner of gruesome violations of media ethics by the private electronic media and wanted to know the machinery deployed by the Commissioner to curb such violations.

Mr. Rajapakse wanted to know whether the private media follow the instructions issued by the Commissioner and took up the position that the private media needed monitoring as there was a gross violation of all norms of ethics by the private media. He wanted the Commissioner to take appropriate steps. Considering the allegations made by Rajapakse, Commissioner Dayananda said that he would summon the private media heads for a meeting on Tuesday.

Those present at the meeting on Friday, welcomed the decision.
