Assistance to rebuild flood-damaged temples by DEEPAL WARNAKULASURIYA Ven. Bodagama Chandima Nayaka Thera, Chief Sanghanayaka to Taiwan and President of the Dharmachakkra Child Foundation, Bandaragama, who last November offered financial assistance to reconstruct 40 temples in the Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Ratnapura districts which were damaged by floods and landslides in May 2003, handed over Rs 25 million to the chief incumbents of the temples last week. The funds came from the 'Theravada Samadhi Educational Foundation' and Buddhists in Taiwan. The money will be utilised to repair 40 temples and rebuild four temples completely destroyed by floods. The Nayaka Thera told a function held to make the donations at the Child Foundation that his efforts would help to preserve the teachings of the Lord Buddha. Representatives of the 'Theravada Samadhi Educational Foundation' in Taiwan and Buddhists had arrived in the country to participate in the function. Concurrently with the proceedings, four books compiled by cartoonist Tissa Hewawissa of our sister paper Silumina were offered to the Maha Sangha. These books have been compiled under the Bodhisathva Pictorial Project of the Foundation. Forty final year medical students from four universities were also given their last premium from 'Theravada Samadhi Educational Foundation' by Advisor Huwan Mao Shiun at the function. Forty children selected from schools island-wide were also given scholarships. The Foundation also distributed 5000 packs of books including the 'Pirivena Poth Vahanse' and 'Dhammapadaya' in Sinhala, English and Tamil. |
