US State Dept. official on visit Torkel L. Patterson, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs, will visit Sri Lanka this week. Patterson is on a familiarisation tour of the region. While in Sri Lanka, he will meet with a variety of government officials, political leaders and others. Patterson has come to the Bureau from Tokyo, where he was Senior Advisor to the US Ambassador in Japan. From 2001 to 2002, he was the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council, and from 1991 to 1993, served as Director of Asian Affairs on the National Security Council. From 1988 to 1991, Patterson was Senior Director for Japan in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs. A retired naval officer, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy. |
