German NGO to educate Lankans on maximising universal sufferage

by Elmo Leonard

A German aid organisation with socio-political objectives is intent on educating Sri Lankans on how to utilise universal suffrage to get the maximum benefit to themselves and the nation. "We do not wish to tell people which party they should vote for," Konrad - Adenauer - Stiffung E.V. Representative to Sri Lanka, Dr. Carola Stein said.

Dr. Stein said Adenauer is offering assistance for the better governance of local government and other elected bodies including Parliament, and educate people to understand the role of these bodies, to develop the nation. Beginning April, Adenauer will undertake a programme in the Moneragala district to strengthen the rural community as a pressure group in the political decision-making process. Under this project costing Rs. 30,000, NGOs would choose 20 groups, each consisting of a man and woman, and enlighten them on issues such as democracy and civil rights.

The 40 selected rural leaders would be equipped with knowledge and attitudes on democracy, human rights, conflict resolution, devolution of power, federalism and political solutions to ethnic problems and related subjects.

In May, Adenauer plans to hold workshops for heads of local governments and their opposition members in Nuwara Eliya, Matara, and Kurunegala and educate them on how to improve governance and carry out development work effectively. The project is expected to cost one million rupees. Similar programmes, at a cost of two million rupees, had already been carried out in the districts of Puttalam, Hambantota, Moneragala, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy.
