Saudi Embassy clarifies

The Saudi Embassy in Sri Lanka has clarified that Ajwad Abdulla Al Fasi and his son have no official or religious position in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and that they only represent themselves.

This is in response to several media reports that referred to Al Fasi as the Imam of the Holy Mosque in Mecca, or its Chief, during their visit to Sri Lanka in January.

Trade Fair for women

Women play a major role in bringing valuable foreign exchange to the country and therefore they must be encouraged to continue this good work and also the welfare of their families must be looked into, said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake.

He made this observation when he addressed a large gathering of women on the occasion of the International Women's Day held at the Auditorium of the D. S. Senanayake Memorial Library in Kandy.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that after setting up of the Ministry of Central Region Development, several opportunities have been provided to the women to increase their earnings through various projects initiated by the Ministry, during the past two years.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that one of these is a Trade Fair for women to market the products turned by the women. This has given the women a break in the business world, and brought along with it much recognition.

In the future too it is our intention to give the women their due place in the trading world, very specially the women from the rural areas so that their products could be given the necessary exposure by which they could increase their earnings tremendously, so that they will continue with the traditional vocations without looking for alternative employment.

All this brought in real value for the products turned out by women which was earlier was being sold at a much lower price.
