Two juniors for WJGC in Scotland

by LAL GUNASEKERA

Top juniors will represent Sri Lanka at the World Junior Golf Championship (WJGC) to be staged in Scotland in July and trials for the final selection will be conducted soon by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) on the Ridgeways.

The President of the SLGU Shiran de Soysa, told the Sunday Observer that the two players in the under-16 age group will comprise one boy and one girl. He said that there are six boys who will face trials - three from RCGC, two from NEGC and one from Victoria, while there is only one girl in contention.

He also said that the SLGU are 'giving a helping hand' to the country's professional Anura Rohana who is scheduled to leave next week for the Indian Open Championship to be staged in Delhi on March 25, 26, 27 and 28. De Soysa further said that the SLGU are yet looking for sponsors to assist them to stage one leg of the Hero Honda Professional Golf Tour in September on Ridgeways where between 140 to 150 professionals will vie for honours.

He said: "Sponsors are reluctant to come in at this stage, but I am certain that after the general election on April 2, we, the SLGU will find the necessary sponsors. The total prize money needed is Rs. 2 million. This is being organised by the Indian Professional Golf Association and Tiger Sports Marketing."

The Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) who are celebrating their 125th anniversary this year, have appointed a high powered committee to make the arrangements to celebrate this event in August for one week.
