Reiki - requires faith and openness

by Umangi de Mel

Trends are changing...People yearn to be healed of old wounds and soothed of pain and heart-ache, and live a more spiritual and sublime sort of life.

Having fought restlessly with a multitude of emotions since Pandora's box was opened, man has resorted to feeling deep down to free their souls of doubt and danger.

Reiki induces inner calm, enhances well-being zest for life and renews one's sense of purpose. "Reiki is a healing system that uses cosmic energy. It's been practised 2500 years ago in places like India and Tibet," says Reiki Master Surangani Abeyratne.

The Japanese art of healing was forgotten for a very long time and it was re-discovered at the beginning of the last century by Dr. Mikao Usui, a distinguished Japanese scholar. "In the presence of higher beings such as Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ or any other special being who helps others, such therapies are taken off the earths plane until people need it again", she says.

Reiki is a Japanese word. The first syllable, 'Rei' means 'Aura' or subtle body and 'ki' means energy or power. According to Surangani, different cultures and spiritual paths have different names for this energy. "In China it's called 'Qi' or 'Chi', in India, it's 'Shakthi' or 'prana' and in English we use terms such as, 'Life force', 'Cosmic Consciousness' on 'Divine Energy'. Reiki is a hands-on healing system for channelling the life force which will be with you for life.

"It can cure anything but it's nothing to do with religion," she adds.

"Reiki is a wonderful way of healing people removing negativity out of their bodies. It basically focuses on the healing of energetic imbalances as they present themselves on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels.

"Since we live in a negative world full of stress and strain and people having a lot of negative thoughts, words and deeds, this system of healing and others such as Aromatherapy, Reflexology etc. have reappeared to help oneself and others," Surangani says. According to her, Reiki also makes you aware of your faults.

It can help one to deal with emotions such as anger, jealousy and hatred, "Sometimes people seem very nice to us, but we don't know what is going on in their minds. What people don't realise is that we fall ill because of our negative thoughts, words and deeds."

She points out that every ailment has a thought pattern because of which you get that particular ailment. One may have had those thought patterns in this life or it may be something that one's brought with him from another lifetime.

"When you have negative thoughts, speech and actions, you block your chakras, or Energy centres (crown, forehead, throat, heart solar plexus, navel, base) from spinning at the usual speed that is necessary for good health.

This obstruction causes the 'dis-ease' of the Chakras and then causes the body to show symptoms of the different diseases associated to the different Chakras. We reap what we sow, there's action and reaction and there's cause and effect. This is also called 'Karma'," she explains. Reiki is a method that needs constant practice.

One becomes physically strong and emotionally a layman towards a super being. Once a student is initiated to the class, he's taught how to keep his hand on himself or on another person's body and remove - the negativity Reiki requires faith and openness. "If you keep doubting the art, it won't be effective on you and you've got to be open to it.

If you stick to the affirmation, it will definitely work wonders on you," she points out.

Reiki includes symbols that are used to enhance the power of healing. There are different symbols for different ailments. Students are initially taught to draw them properly, "It's important to be able to draw the symbols the proper way. Once the students are initiated I make them feel the energy in their heads."

This is not all, Reiki can heal somebody who's thousand miles away. "It's called 'distant healing'. The students are taught how to protect oneself and others on a daily basis. Also, to clear your houses of negativity. Sometimes when people come to your house, they leave bad thoughts behind, which can affect the inmates of the house, over a period of time. The method includes receiving a message from a pendulum," she reveals.

Reiki can be used for anything and everything. Parents can send energy in the form of a message from home to a child who's sitting for an exam. "You can energise your food, pump yourself with energy when tired, or help somebody to overcome a sick feeling, that occurred while travelling.

"Our bodies are like vehicles. It's this body that helps us traverse on this earth from birth to death. Therefore, it's very important that we look after our bodies," she says.

Reiki not only looks after the well-being of our bodies. It also helps people on all levels - spiritual, mental and emotional, says Surangani. Reiki helps one to heal animals and plants and even works with electronics. It's a safe method of healing that involves no medication. "It helps one to look within and ensures that you live a stress free life full of loving kindness because Reiki is love and light."
