A false promise

by a Staff Reporter

US Ambassador Jeffrey Lunstead had told President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga that America will not sign any agreement with the Sri Lankan government to extend the Multi Fibre Agreement until their Presidential Election is over in November this year, sources told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

The UNP at their election campaigns had given another false promise that they will sign an agreement with the US in May to extend the Multi Fibre Agreement in order to save jobs of thousands of youth who are working in garment factories. "This is one of the best examples for the public of the false promises given by the UNP to win the April 2 General Election", sources said.

Americans are considering the fact that extending of the Multi Fibre Agreement for developing countries could affect their garment factories in North and South Carolina.
