Elections Commissioner warns against releasing unauthorised results

by E. Weerapperuma

The Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake has warned that he would take stern action against those who violate procedures and announce election results without his approval.

A team of 30 members led by Prof. V. K. Samaranayake will set up a computer centre at the Elections Department at Rajagiriya, and will Co-ordinate with all the electoral districts to make the announcement of results, on April 2, soon after the countings are over.

Results will be telecast through Rupavahini, the State television network, other television channels on request and through the Internet from the Special Computer Centre set up at the Election Commissioner's Department at Rajagiriya. The School of Technology at the Colombo University, which handles the release of the final results, will work round the clock from the election day until the final district result is released.

A spokesman for the School of Technology told the Sunday Observer that they are now setting up the temporary centre at the Election Commissioner's Department and pointed out that they have been doing this for the past 22 years. The team will collect all election results sent by the respective Chiefs of Staff at the counting centres and put them into format before releasing the results. The spokesman said that unlike the previous years, facilities have been provided to the three district counting centres in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara to facilitate the release of the final results." When the counting centres enter the final results to the computers at the three respective districts, the Computer Centre at the Election Department will be able to release them simultaneously", he said.

He also said that the Centre at the Elections Commissioner's Department will release the final results to the State run television network.

There will be a website as well and the print media will be able to obtain results directly.

The first result is expected to be announced after midnight. The results will be released after they are scrutinised and approved by the Commissioner.
