Polls violence by ANTON NONIS The number of election related violence has shot up to 1072, with 43 incidents recorded, 24 hours ending at 6.00 am yesterday. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jayantha Wickremaratne, these include 846 criminal offences and 226 violations of Election Laws. ten incidents of damages to party offices were recorded in ten instances and were from the areas of Anuradhapura, Chilaw, Galle, Elpitiya, Tangalle and Vavuniya. The Police have arrested 269 Army deserters identified as being involved in a majority of incidents. Threats using knives and pistols have constituted a bulk of the complaints made to the police. Ampara topped the list on complaints made to police, followed by Ratnapura and Anuradhapura. UPFA with 403 had made the highest number of complaints, followed by UNF with 273, JVP with 88, SLMC 30 and PA 25. DIG Wickremaratne said there had been 1437 election related violations recorded by this time during the 2001 election. The drop in the numbers were due to the stiff security measures adopted by the Police, he said. Meanwhile, Wing Commander Ajantha Silva said there had been a number of bookings for Air Force helicopters by politicians including President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. |
