Relatives contesting election General Election 2004 has a number of special features. For the first time, we see 87 women contesting the elections. Out of this, 23 women are contesting the Colombo district under the Jathika Janatha Party while the others contest under different parties or as independent candidates. Then we have fathers and sons contesting elections. In Matale, both Alick Aluvihare (father) and Ranjith Aluvihare (son) are contesting on the UNP ticket. While Reggie Ranatunga is contesting Gampaha, Arjuna Ranatunga, his son, is contesting the Colombo district. Both are from the UPFA. We also have brothers contesting the election. While Vasudeva Nanayakkara comes from the Nava Samasamaja Party National List, his brother Hemakumara Nanayakkara contests Galle district on the UNP ticket. Mahinda Rajapakse, his brother Chamal Rajapakse and close relative Nirupama Rajapakse are contesting Hambantota on the UPFA ticket. Chief Ministers contesting the election are Reginald Cooray (Western Province), H.G. Sirisena (Southern Province), Mohan Ellawala (Sabaragamuwa Province), A.M. Buddhadasa (Uva Province) and Athula Wijesinghe (North-Western Province). Former ministers among the women contesting the election include Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake, Renuka Herath and Sunethra Ranasinghe of the UNP and Sumedha Jayasena and Pavithradevi Wanniarchchi of the UPFA. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinge along with Ministers M.H. Mohommad, Ravi Karunanayake, Karunasena Kodituwakku, Gamini Lokuge, Milinda Moragoda, Bandula Gunawardena, T. Maheswaran and Mohommad Mahroof are contesting the Colombo district. |
