Election observer visits N-E The Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM), John Cushnahan left on a five-day visit to Jaffna, Batticaloa and Trincomalee yesterday in connection with election monitoring activities. Cushnahan visited these areas during the 2000 and 2001 elections as well. Cushnahan, who left for Jaffna on Saturday, will be in Trincomalee and Batticaloa from Monday to Wednesday and will be accompanied by the Head of the EU Delegation to Sri Lanka W. Wilton and EU EOM Media Expert J. Maiola. Cushnahan said he was looking forward to visiting the North and East once again, but condemned in the strongest possible terms the murderous acts and all incidences of violence that have taken place in the North and East. "Violence has no part to play in the democratic process. It is a cancer that eats at the very heart of democracy," he said. |
