Chess workshop at Panagoda appreciated by all

The Anatoly Karpov Chess Club is going places and they held their 105th chess workshop at the Panagoda Army Cantonment where Suneetha Wijesuriya - Sri Lanka's sole Chess Olympiad Gold Medallist and the Co-ordinating Officer Bandula Withanage demonstrated and showed the 150 army officers and other ranks and even civilians the art of playing chess.

Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya demonstrated how the game of chess is played in a simple manner to the keen followers who were mostly novices. The arm officers and other ranks were quick to grasp the finer points of the game.

There were two sessions. In the morning, the two instructors first introduced the basic principles and the know-how of chess and then in the latter part of the day the participants were able to gather the technique to a great extent.

Though the programme and training was confined to one day, the army personnel highly appreciated the know-how they gathered as beginners.

The Anatoly Karpov Chess Club distributed booklets and handouts on chess and there is no doubt that the soldiers will put the literature to good use within the Corps of Engineering Services of the Panagoda Army Camp.

On the Army side, it was Major Pani Kavikeshawa - the Commanding Officer of the First Engineer Services Regiment under the director of Colonel Mahinda Ambanpola, USP, who organised the exercise while it was co-ordinated by Major Kithulgoda.
