Remembering Parakrama - the eldest of sporting Jayasundera family

It's time to get-together and remember of their fold. The Jayasunderas who have made a indelible mark in the sporting history of Kandy. Seven brothers represented Dharmaraja College in sports activities during their school career.

April 1 will mark the third death anniversary of the eldest of the clan - Parakrama who shone as a boxer and athlete at Dharmaraja College in the sixties. Parakrama boxed at the Stubbs Shield meet in 1962.

He boxed for a long spell for Dharmaraja and went on to win intermediate Welterweight class beating Mahinda Weerakkody to win the title in 1970. Earlier in 1961, at the Central Province Meet, Parakrama beat M. Sabaratnam in the National Boxing Championships in the Welterweight class and he was also the weightlifting champion.

Besides Parakrama, the other brothers who excelled in sports are: Daya (retired DIG, Police), Ananda (Assistant General Manager, Bank of Ceylon), Upananda (Kandy Municipal Council fame), Sarath (SSP), Major General Gamini of Sri Lanka Army, Senerath also of Bank of Ceylon.
