Rajans on top on first day

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDESSN, Kandy Sports Corr.

Dharmaraja College were better placed on the first day of their 98th 'Battle of the Maroons' against Kingswood College which began at the Asgiriya Stadium on Friday.

Heavy overnight rain delayed the start by 45 minutes following a wet outfield. Kingswoodians won the toss and took first strike. As for the Rajans it was a good toss to lose, as the wicket did not play easy.

Kingswoodians lost an early wicket when opener Gihan Dilshard was run-out off a direct-hit from the covers by Gayan Wijetilleke. The other opener Hirantha Pallegedera followed also run-out trying to steel a quick single. Kingswoodians 43 for 2. Prolific run-getter Indika Senaratne was next to go giving a return catch to left-arm spinner Amal Ekanayake and the score slumped to 43 for 3 and the Kingswoodians never recovered from it.

Amal Ekanayake bowling to a fine length had the opponents in deep difficulty and whipped the cream off the Kingswoodians batting. At lunch Kingswoodians were 68 for 4 off 38 overs. Their misery continued after lunch and were 78 for 6 at one stage. It was only a 38-run stand for the seventh wicket between captain Samudu Wijesinghe and vice-captain Gihan Ekanayake helped them to a partial recovery.

An early declaration by Rajans today could place more pressure on their opponent.
