Dialog technology 'schols' for 27 more top performers Dialog GSM has awarded a second group of Advanced Level top performers with the country's premier technology scholarship - the Dialog scholarship - which will assist them during their undergraduate years. An induction ceremony was held recently at the University Grants Commission granting the scholarships to the 27 top performers from each district in the island in the Mathematics stream at the GCE (A/L) Examination of 2003. The recent induction brings the total number of Dialog scholars to seventy-seven. Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, CEO of Dialog GSM, speaking at the ceremony emphasised that the Dialog scholar programme, Sri Lanka's premier technology scholarship, was focused on providing opportunity for top academic performers from across the country. "Since the scholarship was offered to top performers in each and every district of Sri Lanka, this initiative will touch students from all parts of our country," he said. He said that Dialog was proud to be associated with the development of Sri Lankan talent for the future, and thanked the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka and the Universities of Moratuwa, Peradeniya and Ruhuna for giving Dialog GSM the opportunity to create and grow the Dialog technology scholarship programme. Mothilal de Silva, Dialog GSM's General Manager, Corporate Planning and Development, outlining the objectives of the Dialog technology scholarship programme said it would provide an incentive to deserving students while creating greater awareness about the telecommunication industry among the youth of Sri Lanka. He said the country's premier technology scholarship would elevate the technical and business competence of young people by providing assistance to them in acquiring meaningful and marketable skills. The ultimate objective of Dialog GSM's scholarship programme was to develop a highly disciplined, highly responsible and talented futuristic work force, he added. The Dialog technology scholars programme also sponsors the best Ordinary Level performers in each of the 25 districts in the island, who wish to continue their education in the Engineering stream. The programme is administered in collaboration with the Ministry of Education together with the University Grants Commission. The 30 million rupee dialog scholarship fund supports 54 student sponsorships each year in addition to two fully paid scholarships to the Multimedia University in Malaysia, which are granted to the finest. The Dialog scholarship programme, positioned as a technology scholarship, is designed to provide deserving students each year with the incentive to pursue their education and to provide leadership for the technology-oriented society of tomorrow. Reflecting Dialog GSM's strategy of reaching out to the population beyond technological boundaries, the technology 'scholarship programme aims to elevate technical and business competencies of youth by providing them with assistance in acquiring meaningful and marketable skills. It is, therefore, geared to develop a highly disciplined, highly responsible and talented workforce for the future. The premier technology scholarship programme is supported by the University Grants Commission, the Department of Education, the Ministry of Education and the Faculties of Engineering of the Peradeniya, Moratuwa and Ruhuna Universities. |
