AHPL plans major hospital project by HIRAN H. SENEVIRATNE Arogya Hospitals (Pvt) Ltd (AHPL) has planned a major project in the country with a view to recruiting new medical graduates for a chain of hospitals. Since the government was unable to recruit newly passed out doctors to state hospitals due to the limited number of vacancies, it had decided to launch in this project, said AHPL Chairman Dr. Anura de Silva. Dr. de Silva said that under this project, hospitals would be established mainly in rural areas, where adequate facilities were not available to provide a useful health service at a nominal rate. These hospitals would be established initially in the major districts of the country and the AHPL had signed an agreement recently with the Board of Investment (BOI) to construct a 500-bed hospital in Ragama. At the outset it would include 200 beds before extending it to 500 by the end of next year (2005), he added. The total land area required for the project was approximately 2 acres and construction work would begin in early May. It would also provide employment for more than 600 personnel,he said. The new hospital would comprise two operation theatres, an emergency care unit with separate wards for maternity, children and a general one with all basic amenities. These hospitals would preferably recruit newly passed out medical graduates in the country, he added. |
